This iteration is distinct from an earlier, less sophisticated 2016 ransomware variant that shared the name and an aesthetic inspired by the Mr. Robot TV series. The group's primary motivation is financial gain, achieved through a double extortion model where they encrypt victim data and subsequently threaten to leak sensitive information if ransom demands are not met. A distinguishing characteristic of this group is its collaboration with other cybercrime entities, notably a partnership with the FunkSec group announced in January 2025, which aims to leverage combined strengths for more effective and widespread operations. The group maintains its presence and facilitates communications and data leakage through a dedicated Telegram channel and an Onion site.
